Students are given a budget and asked to “shop” for family and friends. This is an engaging and exciting math project for students.
This project includes basic computation, problem solving skills, and a little logical thinking.
Students learn to budget, plan, organize, and even recognize just how far money will go. My 4th graders always think that the amount of money in their budget is a lot until they realize that as they start to buy big items that are cool (mostly meaning expensive), they quickly run out of money and are then left to rethink their spending.
This has been a class favorite for years and is great for this time of year as we struggle to find engaging, yet academic activities to keep students interested as we get closer to Winter Break.
I hope you enjoy this activity as much as my kids do!
