Keep your students engaged and thinking all the way through the holiday season! This is one of my students’ favorite math activities! I love it too, because they are thinking, collaborating, explaining their thinking to their peers and practicing their addition and subtraction.
In class, small groups of students sit together and take turns drawing and reading a card aloud. Other group members can follow along on their recording sheet with the reader. The group decides together if the problem requires addition or subtraction. All group members must agree. The card is deposited into the agreed upon box. Once all cards have been sorted, the group opens a box and compares the problem numbers on the cards they inserted to the list of problems on the answer key. They discuss any discrepancies. I like them to call me over and share their “aha moments” at this point. Once card sorting is competed, discussed and and revised, the students begin solving problems of their choice.
