This product is a fabulous collection of 10 different holiday celebrations from all around the world. This close reading unit offers each article on 3 different levels of text and vocabulary complexity. The differentiation is done for you! You are able to provide all of your students with the same content while meeting each of their individual reading level needs. High resolution photographs enhance the articles and increase student engagement. Your students have the opportunity to document their learning in the included Holidays Around the World Student Passports
throughout the unit.

Each article explains specific details about the holiday. Each article is followed by 3 pages of text dependent/ close reading questions. These pages are designed to be used after the first, second and third read of the text. The first set of questions are explicit text dependent questions. the second set focuses on vocabulary and requires students to use some inferring skills. The final set of questions asks students to synthesize and explain what they have learned using higher order thinking skills.
The student passport (which is also a stand alone product: Holidays Around the World Student Passports
-4 passport covers to choose from (1 full color version and 3 versions that students color).
-A student “information” page to use in the front of the passport
-3 passport pages for each country – A page with a summary of the holiday celebrated in that country, a page with simple review questions, and a page for students to summarize what they know about the country’s holiday. You can have students use all 3 pages for each country, you can differentiate the passport booklets for the different needs of your students, or you can choose which pages to include.
-Blank passport pages for students to collect “stamps” as you learn about each country.
-A page of colorful circles that include a symbol for the holiday and the country name. These can be cut out and each student can glue one “stamp” into their passport.
The Lexile levels of the included texts vary from 400-1000 to meet the needs of all of the readers in your classroom. The texts also make excellent Shared Reading experiences for younger students!
There are so many ways to use these articles in your classroom!
-You may have students read the articles independently using the article that best matches their individual reading level. (The article and text dependent question sheets make great morning work or weekly homework!)
-You may use the articles for small group instruction
-You may choose to use an article written at a higher level for a Shared Reading experience or Shared Close Read this is especially meaningful for young students or students with a lower independent reading level. Exposing these students to more rigorous texts and holding them accountable for their comprehension is an excellent way to help struggling students meet the standards!
