This unit provides many solid hours of holiday related seat work that primary (2nd or 3rd grade) students can do with very little guidance.
This unit is an elaborate cloze activity. Students read about each country and its winter holiday traditions and below, on the same page, fill in the blanks below where the text is repeated with key words missing. (The key words are underlined to help emergent readers.)
This unit is intended to be copied into a student "book." There is plenty of reading.
There are also three full page coloring pages, one cut & paste activity, a challenge page, a challenge puzzle page, a word search, a match-the-holiday-with-the-tradition review (words to pictures), and a final multiple choice test. There is also a bonus EASY holiday letter. (See below.)
The unit covers the holiday traditions that immigrants brought to America such the Christmas tree's origins in Germany, coal for naughty children & stockings from Holland, and Poinsettias from Mexico. Other December traditions such as Lucia Day in Sweden, Posadas in Mexico, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are also explained. Last, of course, Santa Claus is covered from his origins 1700 years ago as a kind man who did good deeds and was later made a saint. (It explains that, being a saint, he can perform the miracle of bringing gifts to people everywhere.)
BONUS -----EASY HOLIDAY LETTER -----------
You can help your students to quickly write a nice short, personalized thank-you for all you do for me letter to enclose with your holiday project. Parents *really* appreciate that you take the time to teach this.
The enclosed format makes it EASY. (Download the preview, and its very self explanatory.)
Students personalize their sloppy copy with ideas brainstormed with the class. Since half the words are already written on the sloppy copy there is far LESS *correcting* for the teacher to do before the students write, by hand, the entire final copy.
The FINAL COPY has cute holiday pictures (the preview shows a few) and has enough space for their entire letter.
Decorate folded construction paper, paste in the child's note and it makes for a very IMPRESSIVE card. Parents really appreciate you teaching this gesture to their child.
This unit has much to offer in the way of reading practice, social studies, and just plain fun you'll find you use it every year.
