As 1st and 2nd graders sort words by number of syllables, they develop phonological awareness, practice one-to-one correspondence, and and get ready for more challenging activities such as blending and segmenting phonemes.
To complete these worksheet activities, children sort words of 1 to 2 syllables or 1, 2, and 3 syllables. There are two lists of words for each sort, grouped according to reading level.
Each resource includes:
→Two worksheets for writing the words
→Two pages of 1- and 2-syllable words (grouped by reading level)
→Two pages of 1-, 2-, and 3-syllable words (grouped by reading level)
→A 1- to 2-syllable poster; and a 1- to 3-syllable poster with examples
You can use each of the printables as:
✓a literacy station activity
✓a large or small group activity
✓an activity for early finishers
✓a homework assignment
✓a follow-up activity after a lesson in clapping syllables
✓or use the blank cards to fill in student names
