Students can make a 4-6 page Christmas themed word problem book. Print off the picture templates, cut the pages in half, and cut lined handwriting paper so that it fits on the back of the pictures. Students can use glue sticks to glue their word problem on the back of the pictures. Then use a hole puncher on all of the pictures, and bind the book with red or green string.
Students can add details to the pictures to create creative word problems. With a few of the pictures, students can use items that are already in the picture to create addition or subtraction word problems (such as the reindeer with lights & bells).
Students love reading these books to 1st graders. I taught my students how to properly read their picture books, and help the first graders find the answers. I also modeled how they need to be positive and use encouraging words when the students find the answers, or how to help them find the answers by counting with them if they notice they are having trouble.
