I hear it so often, “grammar is boring and all memorization.” It makes me cringe every time! The fact is, grammar is about the relationships words have with each other. They work with each other to create our wonderful, interesting, and malleable language! Having an understanding of the way in which words work and work together can greatly improve writing. Hollywood Parts of Speech was born because I was trying to find a fun and interesting way to add critical thinking to grammar, so that it would be “sticky” for my 6th grader’s brains. The first time I did this with my kids, I was amazed! The LOVED the challenge of matching the parts of speech with the movie roles, based on the relationships and job roles. I have worked to create a lesson plan that can be adapted for younger and older children. This lesson is truly a way to help students get a strong grasp of the basic parts of speech. It is a great way to introduce grammar!
