This is a wonderful activity as a prerequisite to any Holocaust novel. Here students are acclimated to the Einsatzgruppen that includes a link for further reading.
Students will first read a letter from Heinz to his parents from a Nazi soldier's point of view of the war. The letter depicts Heinz as a caring individual just trying to do what his outfit requires. It is complete with pictures of Heinz and fellow comrades.
In the second activity students view pictures of the Holocaust and are asked to reevaluate Heinz once more with the full knowledge of what his daily duties required.
This activity is riveting and a real eye-opener! Can be used in small groups also.
