This worksheet allows students to use a primary source document to learn about the Dachau and the liberation of Dachau by the American Army during World War II.
The primary source document is written by an American soldier (Sergeant Clarence Williams) and he is writing a letter back home trying to explain the horribleness of Dachau and the Holocaust in general. This letter is shocking and full of passion. This letter is a great way to get students interested in the Holocaust and to see the Holocaust from the perspective of an American soldier during the last month of World War II in Europe.
Students read the document and answer the questions on the worksheet. The worksheet includes 10 questions and has an answer sheet for the teacher. The worksheet can be used to generate classroom discussion or be used as homework. Feel free to modify this assignment as needed for your classes. My students always enjoy reading this primary source and it helps them better understand the Holocaust.
