My students always ask me how the Holocaust prisoners became like animals in chapter 7 of Wiesel’s memoir Night. To help students understand the prisoners’ beastlike transformation, they must analyze Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the effect of the denial of needs upon someone’s behavior. Students are amazed at the discovery!
I have created two PowerPoints for the topic of dehumanization in Elie Wiesel’s Night. Students share a class discussion regarding Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and then they can either group together for the assignment included or work with a partner.
The second PowerPoint allows for a whole class discussion as students are able to see the answers. I have given the answers/examples in chronological order based on the nine chapters of Wiesel’s Night.
The first PowerPoint titled, “Dehumanization” has 12 slides and the second PowerPoint titled “Dehumanized Behavior” has 9 slides.
