I am using this activity with students who chose Holocaust Genre novels and memoirs to read independently. This year I teach repeating English 1 students -- they are reluctant, but invested in passing the course.
This activity has fostered discussion about the main characters in the novels and memoirs in a fun, nonthreatening way.
Much like a people search BINGO, students first consider their own character and mark the statements that apply to the character in their book or to themselves. Then, they find others who can sign off on certain characteristics/statements. Finally, students create a character sketch about their character.
I just this board to go over certain elements in class. For example, if students marked "I wish I didn't choose this text," we discuss when it is okay to abandon ship and choose a new novel. If students have marked, "I don't know if I can trust my narrator," we discuss point of view.
