This is a fantastic novel when introducing the topic of the Holocaust to young people. I use this with my 5th graders and have found it to be effective. Just enough information without the explicit details. Included is *a scavenger hunt for students to familiarize themselves with the parts of the book
*a time line assignment that the students complete as they read the book noting important events and their dates
* a line for creating a time line of the collected events
* a blank European map to fill in as countries are mentioned
* a labeled European map for being able to identify the location of key countries during world War II
* a teacher's guide with notes from each chapter used for discussion
*Chapter Questions fill-in the blanks, open ended responses, and short answer (this begins with Chapter 2 because I typically have the students do the Scavenger Hunt first and then I read and discuss the first chapter together)
