Students review the Holocaust by completing a timeline activity and answering 4 questions. There are 27 items for students to place on the timeline spanning Hitler becoming Chancellor to V-E Day. Students must classify each item according to a system detailed in the instructions, they have one task to complete for 6 items of their choice, and another task to complete for 4 other items of their choice. All instructions are provided in the handout. There are arrows in the first two lines of the timeline showing students the direction to fill out the pieces in. This could work for a sub! Answers are provided where appropriate.
***a teacher's note is included in the file describing an alternate way students can complete this activity***
Sample timeline items and questions include:
--S.S. St. Louis turned away from USA
--massacre at Babi Yar
--Warsaw ghetto uprising
--Explain the difference between a perpetrator and a bystander during the Holocaust. Do you think it would be worse to be a perpetrator or a bystander in 1945 and why? Is your answer the same if the question was “would it be worse in 1980 to have been a perpetrator or a bystander” and you must explain why.
--List and describe 3 ways someone was able to survive the Holocaust.
