Need a fun way to engage and assess what your students hear as you study about (and play) musical examples from Holst's "Mars" from The Planets? Use these listening glyphs with a picture of the planet as well as a figure from mythology for who the planet was named after on it to assess what your students hear. Play a recording (not included) and have your students follow the color code key to assess what they hear. Items assessed in this set include:
♬ strings vs no strings
♬ brass vs no brass
♬ percussion vs no percussion
♬ woodwinds vs no woodwinds
♬ tempo stays the same vs tempo changes
♬ dynamics stay the same vs dynamics change
♬ dissonance vs no dissonance
♬ col legno (using wood part of bow to strike the strings) vs no col legno
♬ repeating ostinato vs no repeating ostinato
Make these glyphs part of a listening station, homework, or as a whole class activity.
