This lesson plan and lab are designed to provide an opportunity for students to apply and reflect on the scientific method. Many students, especially at the high school level, think that they have mastered the scientific method and yet they continue to make the same mistakes and unknowingly hold onto persistent misconceptions. This lesson is structured to provide students with the chance to truly and authentically assess their own understanding and make steps towards correcting any misconceptions they do have. It also provides teachers with great insight into the level of mastery of individual students and the class as a whole.
This product includes a detailed lesson plan and lab instructions for students. During the lab, students work in small groups to design, conduct and analyze the results of a controlled experiment comparing the types of environments that pill bugs (commonly referred to as roly polies) prefer. Roly polies are an easy and engaging organism for students to work with. Students then share their work during a gallery walk and subsequent class discussion. The lesson plan provides guidance on how to conduct the lesson and insight into common student misconceptions.
