This readers’ theater features fourteen eyewitness accounts of the events of Holy Week based on what is found in the four gospels. Starting with the events of Palm Sunday, characters like a Jewish traveler, a disciple, Simon the Leper, Judas, James, Peter, Caiaphas, Pilate, a Roman soldier, Simon of Cyrene, John, Joseph of Arimathea, and Mary Magdalene tell listeners what they saw, heard, and felt as they encountered Jesus through the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, Passover night, arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Interspersed with the readings are verses from the song “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord” for the audience to sing.
This readers’ theater was originally written for a K-8 chapel service in a Christian school. Teachers read the accounts. It could easily be used in a high school chapel setting or a church worship service. (It is not written at a low elementary level.) The duration of the service is about thirty minutes.
