This is a quick and easy project to use as an extension to a measurement unit on area and perimeter. In this project students will use what they know about area and perimeter to design a home floor plan using a given set of specifications. The project allows them the opportunity to practice with the skills before applying them and then gives them the freedom to be creative in designing their own home.
This has been designed for use in fourth grade, but can be used at any other grade level where area and perimeter may need to be reviewed or practiced. This mini unit should take about two class periods and requires the use of a centimeter ruler.
*UPDATE* (April 2016): A few modifications have been made so that measurements on the practice page are more accurate. Also two additional pages have been added so that students can create their own home without the use of a ruler. You only need to use one set of the last four pages for this project. Choose whatever is best for your students.
