I send this home as homework with my ELL students. The parents have to fill it out with their child or the student can fill it out himself/herself depending on their writing level. Then we make a large word web where the students teach their classmates some words in their home language. This week we are reading the story “Abuela” from the kindergarten Reading Street series. It was a great way to introduce the story “Abuela”. The students were able to realize no matter what language they spoke they often called their dads and moms similar names (ie papi, papa). It gave the students a great sense of pride to teach their classmates their home language.
