Fun way for students to keep track of their reading! Students color a book every time they read at home for 30 minutes. This reading log has 30 books for the average 30 days per month. By coloring a book for each day they do their 30 minutes of nightly reading, readers get a visual of their reading progress for the month, and can see how far they have to go to reach their goal of reading 30 minutes each night for 30 days.
At the end of the month, conference with students about their reading progress. Did they meet their goal? For students struggling to reach their goal, you may wish to differentiate the goal by having students set their own goals and determine how many books they will have colored by the end of the month. Use the genre color coding tto determine which genres they are interested in, and which genres they should be encouraged to try.
Extension Ideas: At the end of the month, cut the reading log into strips. Tape the strips along the hallway horizontally, or vertically up to the ceiling to create a reading graph showing how much students have read during the year! The graph works as reading motivation, as students love to see their progress growing down the hallway as the year progresses! If you don't have enough space for a reading graph, try turning the book strips into links, and making a giant, colorful chain showing total time spent reading at home!
