In small groups students will exercise for short intervals and then measure heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate. After data has been collected students will analyze how exercise impacts homeostatic mechanisms such as heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate by creating and analyzing a graph of their data. They will then create a negative feedback loop for heart rate.
*This lab is best suited for high school students but could be adapted for younger students as well. This lab would work best after a short lesson on homeostasis and negative feedback. The lab takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete depending on the focus of your class. Materials you will need to prepare: stop watches, blood pressure monitor.
