Objectives: Compare and contrast passive and active transport. Predict the movement of molecules (including water) across a semipermeable membrane.
Activity: Students create a 3D pyramid that reviews basic concepts of homeostasis and cell transport. They watch a 7:48 video on cell membranes and cell transport. They draw and label a phospholipid layer with channel proteins on the back of their answer sheet. Finally, they analyze diagrams on active and passive transport, explain their reasoning, and predict the movement of water molecules through a cell membrane.
Answer key is shown in the preview file.
Note: The video selected is short, and while it covers a bit more than the basics, the Amoeba Sister videos, have been well received in my classrooms. Two others you might substitute are, Membranes and Transport, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPKvHrD1eS4 (11:45), or Cell Membrane, Passive Transport (4:40), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JShwXBWGMyY .
Add a "Do Now" and "Ticket Out the Door" and you have a complete lesson.
