This is such a fun way to get students involved in some local travel journalism. Although designed for secondary-level, this could easily be adapted for younger kids. They are assigned (or choose) a part of town that they study, visit, take notes on, interview people in, etc., all to create a feature magazine piece complete with a custom map of the area.
We did this project in a humanities course, combining English 9 and Geography. After reading Steinbeck's "Travels with Charley", it was such a fun thing for the kids to become travel writers themselves.
