“Homework Hop” is designed to give your students extra practice on CCSS skills at home, while still encouraging free choice and creativity. Something I have always disliked about homework is the idea that “one size fits all”. As we all know, not all students learn the same way or need practice on the same skills. “Homework Hop” gives students and teachers over 70 assignments to choose from! Now you can easily differentiate homework by assigning particular choices to students or by allowing students to choose their homework based on their own needs and interests.
Each month also includes over 10 multimedia choices, which allow and encourage students to use technology in creative ways. Choices range from basic typing and PowerPoint presentations to creating videos, sending emails, or even blogging. Although the core choices remain the same each month (Spelling, Reading, Writing, Language, and Multimedia), students are also given monthly choices based on holidays or seasons to supplement the 65 original assignments.
Every month, students get a calendar and list of homework choices for that month. Students complete four assignments a week of their choosing. When an assignment is completed, a parent or guardian will initial that day on the calendar and write the “code” for the homework choice. You can require students to complete one each night of the week, or let them choose their nights, as long as 4 are completed. For holidays or exceptions, put an “X” on that day of the calendar. For every assignment, students must turn in proof of their work.
How do you keep students from picking the same choices over and over? Students are required to complete at least one assignment from Spelling, Reading, Language, and Writing each month. They are also not allowed to repeat the same homework assignment twice in a month. This way you are not getting the same thing from them over and over again. However, feel free to step in whenever necessary. If you feel a student is not being challenged by the choices they are making, cross some of them out on their paper or assign a particular assignment. Likewise, you can always modify choices to make them easier, shorter, or simpler for students.
Grading the homework choices is all up to you. I have included a monthly grade report to send home, as well as some simple rubrics for each core subject. Feel free to use these or create your own. “Homework Hop” is designed to make homework better for your students, and for you! I hope you find this to be true.
