After introducing homographs/multiple-meaning words, this follow up activity greatly deepens their understanding and knowledge of the topic. A homographs definition poster is included as well. Students can use this page for their notes, have it at a center as a reference material, or just hang it on the board for students who need a reminder.
Students are given 20 cards with 2 sentences each that contain homographs on them (the preview of the answer key shows the full list). After deciding which word would be appropriate for both sentences, students refer to the "desk dictionary" included and decide which definition number corresponds to which sentence.
*They can either record their answers right on the paper to turn in like a worksheet, or they can each record their answers on the accompanying student response sheet.
*This activity is perfect for a variety of different working levels- You can use it for centers, independent work, partner work, homework, or even part of your emergency substitute plans!
*It’s split into 2 sections, so that it can be graded easier (each part is 20 points and then you can put the percentage underneath). The answer key is very student friendly if you allow your students to grade each other’s papers in class!
*They're similar to task cards, but not the exact style. They line up with the following page, so you can copy them front and back and cut them without any worries of cutting words off!
This is great practice on how to use a dictionary and also truly helps students to better understand multiple meaning words! I find that it really helps my ELL students as well. If you let them try to guess the words without having the dictionaries available first, they love trying so hard to think of them on their own :)
Note: Everything is lined up to fit on one page per section (there should be 5 homograph cards per page, and 5 entries per dictionary page). So if for some reason, yours doesn't download the proper way, please let me know ASAP and I'll figure out how to fix it! Thanks!
