Homophone Snatch is an engaging way to help students learn homophones and their meanings. Print the cards and talk about each pair and how the words sound
exactly alike to our ears but look very different to our eyes. The only way we can tell the difference is to look at the word and to know the meaning of the word due to the
letters used to spell the word.
After talking about the words we lay all the cards out on a table top in a scattered formation. One person picks up a word and tells what the word is, what it means, and uses it in a sentence. The next person has to find the related homophone and do the same thing.
The next game we play is the SNATCH version. All the cards are scattered around the table top. We go player by player for this version. Player 1 has just a few seconds to snatch up a pair of homophones. Player 1 has to be able to tell about the meaning of both words. Player 2 then goes doing the same thing. If while you are waiting to take your turn someone SNATCHES up the pair you were going to use you must find a new pair to be able to talk about. When it is your turn you have to be ready quickly to SNATCH them up off the table or your turn is lost and the play goes on to the next player.
These cards could also be used to play ‘Go Fish for a Homophone’ and ‘Homophone Concentration’.
I hope this resource helps you students grow in their love of playing with words!
