A triple play activity to practice the homophones there, their, they're.

One set of 24 practice sentences, multiple ways to use them:

1. Task Cards / Clip Cards

2. Board Game

3. Slap Game / Response Cards

Task Card Directions:

  1. Print and laminate the cards. I recommend cold lamination because it is thicker and doesn’t peel, even after you cut through it. I also suggest printing each set of cards on a different color of cardstock. This makes it easier to know which set a lost card found on the floor belongs to.
  2. Pass out sets of cards to each group of students (I do one set per 4-6 students) and give each student a recording sheet.
  3. Students write their answers on the recording sheet and they can be checked later.

Clip Card Alternative: Place a set of cards in a center along with a set of clothes pins. Students clip a clothes pin over the correct answer for each card. Students can check each other, or you can look at the cards later.

Board Game Directions:

Materials needed and not included in this download:

  1. Dice– one die per group of students
  2. Player Pieces– one per player, popular options in my class include plastic counter circles, mini erasers, and milk jug lids.

Preparation:

  1. Print and laminate cards and game boards, make one set of each for every group of 2-4 students. I recommend cold lamination because it is thicker and doesn’t peel, even after you cut through it. I also suggest printing each set on a different color of cardstock. This makes it easier to know which set a lost card found on the floor belongs to.
  2. Give each group of students one die, enough counters for all students, a set of cards, a game board, and an answer key card.

Turn Directions:

  1. The first person takes a card, reads it aloud, and states his/her answer. If needed, the answer can be checked on the answer card.
  2. If correct, the player rolls the die and moves his/her piece. If incorrect, the turn is over.
  3. Play continues in this manner until one player reaches finish and becomes the winner.

Slap Game Directions:

  1. Print and laminate the large there/their/they’re cards as well as the question cards. I recommend cold lamination because it is thicker and doesn’t peel, even after you cut through it. You will only need one set of cards. You will also need two fly swatters, one for each team.
  2. Place the large cards on the board. I recommend using a strong magnet to keep them in place.
  3. Divide students into two teams.
  4. Have one student from each team come forward, take a fly swatter, and take up a position in front of the three signs.
  5. Read the sentence aloud.
  6. Students race to be the first to swat the correct word for the sentence. The first person to hit it (has his/her fly swatter on the bottom) wins a point for his/her team.
  7. Call two new students to the board and repeat. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Response Card Alternative: Print and laminate a set of small there/their/they’re cards for each student. Give each student a set of cards. Read the sentence. Students hold up the card for what they believe is the correct answer. This allows you to quickly check the comprehension of all students at the same time.
