Homophones are words that have the same sound (pronunciation) but different meaning and (usually) different spelling.
Included in this document are 66 pairs of common homophones. These can be printed, laminated, cut out and used in various activities to practice correct spelling, pronunciation and meaning of words.
Games / Activities to try with learners:
1. Snap - Shuffle the cards that contain pairs of homophones and distribute to each player. Players take turns to put down one card at a time into the center. When a pair comes up players compete to be the first to call out Snap and place your hand on the cards. That player then wins those cards.
2. In groups players match the homophone pairs, then find the meanings of the words and write them up on the whiteboard.
3. Take 10-20 cards with their matches and spread out into separate rows and columns face down. One set has the word; the other set has its matching meaning. Players take turns to find the matching homophones. The first player reveals a card in set one. They then reveal a card in set 2. (It will be a guess) If they match they keep those cards. Players try to remember where each word is. The player with the most sets at the end of the game wins.
