Students are fascinated with interesting vocabulary words and quickly learn to use them when given the opportunity. With Honey Bees, students learn facts about honey bees and things we can do to save the honey bee population while singing and performing. This is an excellent way for students to learn vocabulary and remember content. Songs and dialog use accurate, scientific vocabulary and add a touch of humor along the way.
The story opens with some flowers wondering where all the bees have gone. We then move inside a bee hive where the queen bee invites us to follow along as two of her attendants inspect the hive and report back to her. We visit the drones and the nursery and learn about the bee life cycle, how honey is made, protecting the hive, bee communication, and some of the challenges threatening the survival of honey bees.
Many of the songs are sung to familiar tunes. A pdf with the piano music for all songs is provided as well as mp3 files. The mp3 files include tracks with lyrics being sung to the music and also tracks with music alone to use after students are familiar with lyrics. The instrumental tracks may be used for performance if you do not have a pianist readily available. Songs include:
Head, Thorax, Abdomen
Honey Bee Life Cycle
Guarding the Hive
The Queen’s Lament
Closing Song: Do Your Part
