Looking to begin a sustainable and engaging independent reading program in your high school classroom? Most students, at some point in their life, enjoyed reading.
They key is getting students to remember when they did love reading! Teachers and Librarians can suggest books to students all they like - but the best suggestions come from their peers! Begin your semester with this Hook Book Presentation and have your students reflect on when they first loved reading (for many students this was a childhood experience) and then have them share a recommendation. While students are watching each other's presentation, they write down the book suggestions that appeal to them. Have used this for years and it's a great way to build a reading community in the classroom.
