Description

Hoot Student Worksheets

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen received the 2002 Newbery Honor Book Award and for good reason. Some endangered burrowing owls are threatened by construction at Mother Paulas All-American Pancake House where the owls are discovered. How will the kids' methods of trying to stop the project differ and what dilemmas do they face? This is a timely environmental issue, perfect for students to discuss the ways they'd solve the problem.

My ready to print student worksheet packets save teachers time! These self explanatory, student worksheets are designed to encourage students to become actively engaged readers through conversation and collaboration with their peers in small groups.

Brainstorming and determining the best answers, as they cite information from the book, creates an atmosphere of higher level thinking. Analyzing text, as they build on each others' responses, and articulating their own ideas, help students become self directed learners.

As students cite information from the book, it creates lively discussions and an atmosphere that encourages better literal and inferential understanding of the story’s components. It also helps students, who have difficulty understanding text or composing answers, become better readers and writers.

After students have brainstormed in small groups to determine the best answers, it's suggested their answers be reviewed with the whole group so they will have an even better and deeper understanding of the story.

The worksheets can also be used as class or homework assignments. If used as informal assessments it will help determine students’ strengths and weaknesses.

The majority of the activities are aligned with the Common Core.

Included in the packet are detailed suggestions of how to use the worksheets. Websites are also included to encourage students to think out of the box and to do more research about endangered animals.
