Your students will love to sing, move, and play recorder with the folk song "Hop Old Squirrel!" This slide show presentation will guide your students through singing the song, adding their own creative movement, and then adding recorder to the mix. Once they have all of that mastered, a B Section poem is included for them to chant and move to. This also provides the opportunity to practice AB Form and to give your students the chance to take turns between playing and singing/moving.

This presentation is intended to be projected on the board for all to see. There is a slide with room to write on if you have an interactive projector or white board. If you don’t have that set up, you can use the non-interactive version of the presentation, and have students write their ideas on paper or another board area in your classroom.

I have saved each slide in the presentation as a .jpg file, which is included. If you do not wish to use every slide in the .pdf file, simply create your own slideshow by inserting the .jpg files you wish to use into your preferred slideshow software, such as PowerPoint or Google Slides. I have also included a .pdf of the song so you can easily print it out for your students if you wish.

SET-UP: This activity requires a recorder for each student. You will also need a projector/screen. Students will need room to sit while learning each piece of the activity, and room to move with locomotor movement during the activity. If you do not have an interactive projector/white board, you can use the non-interactive presentation with a separate area for students to write their movement ideas.

Updated 6/26/2021 to enlarge the notation images on the slides.
