Hopes and Dreams Banners - Back To School Goal Setting Activity & Read Aloud

Activity

Description
This resource will help you lay a foundation for goal setting in your classroom this school year. Perfect for the first weeks back to school, or any milestone moment when you want your students to refocus on goal setting in your classroom, including the beginning of the quarter, beginning of the trimester, or when you return from a school break. Here’s how it works:
★ Interactive Read Aloud: Students will discuss how the plot and setting in the book Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney influence the main character's progress toward fulfilling her hopes and dreams.
★ Goal Setting Activity: After a class discussion about hopes and dreams for the school year, each student will write three S.M.A.R.T. goals to help them fulfill their own school-related dream. A Hopes and Dreams Planner printable is included to help your students organize their ideas.
★ Hopes and Dreams Banner Project: Each student will transfer his/her ideas from their planning page to a creative hopes and dreams banner that can be proudly displayed in the classroom.
★ Hopes and Dreams Banner Reflection Prompts: At the end of the quarter/trimester, your students can reflect on their progress toward fulfilling their dreams using the included reflection prompts.

BENEFITING STUDENTS
Giving your students the opportunity to dream big, and set specific goals for bringing their dreams to fruition is a practice that will make them more mindful and reflective learners. Goal setting and reflective discussion will also help build independence, and leads to more self-directed learning habits.
SCAFFOLDING AND DIFFERENTIATION MADE EASY
The included Hopes and Dreams Planner printable guides your students through the process of writing a dream for the school year, and setting related goals that help them bring that dream to life. Sentence starters and reflective questions are provided on the page, which allows your more independent learners to plan out their goals with written prompts. Those same prompts are perfect for reading aloud as you scaffold for learners who require more step-by-step support.
SAVING TIME
All pages in this resource are ready-to-print and require no prep so your students can easily start goal setting in class tomorrow.
