This packet is designed to be a resource that students can use while working on this project based assessment. This assessment is best applied once students have studied the Civil War and Reconstruction. The question that students will be debating is this: Reconstruction: A Noble Effort or Oppression and Punishment. In this packet, the format for debate is included as well as, the outline for research cards, counterargument cards, samples of research and counterargument cards, hints of topics to check out while preparing for debate and a debate rubric.
My students love this style of assessment because it allows them to shine in the areas of research, writing and public speaking. Students walk away from this style of assessment still remembering the topics at hand, much more so than they would for a simple test.
This project would fall into the category of Project Based Learning while using Document Based Assessment.
