Hot Chocolate Science: A Fun, Delicious SINK OR FLOAT Activity!
By: Jaylynn Richardson
For my school's winter "Science Night," I had to create an activity for students of different ages. I wanted my activity to be fun, eye-catching, and totally unique. I looked high and low for ideas, but nothing seemed to "pop." Then, it came to me! A sink or float activity, but with a HOT CHOCOLATE theme! My station was the uncontested favorite of the night! Some extra staff members even had to be called to my station to help, due to the popularity of this activity!
And, it's sooooooo easy! After making the hot chocolate and pouring into the cups, I simply laid out each of the items to be tested on a paper towel next to the cup (except the whipped cream and chocolate syrup, I applied those directly to the cup). Students loved observing the results as each item went into the cup!
*Tip: What was easiest for ME was to make one big batch of hot chocolate in my slow cooker, and have the hot chocolate ready to ladle into cups as soon as the activity began. But, a different method may work for you, depending on what sort of water-heating element you have available.
