Project Based Learning (PBL) opportunites are wonderful ways to get students to practice skills through real world experiences. The problem with PBLs for me is that they are too long! I designed this PBL to take about 1 hour in an average fourth grade class. The estimation and addition project also incorporates vocabulary, reading, technology and writing!
Richard McRichardson has a $1,000,000 budget for his new hotel. He wants his hotel to be elegant but stay in budget. Students must choose a combination of materials to ensure Mr. McRichardson's dream comes true.
Students access the google site. There they choose walls, doors, a roof, windows and a floor. They have a budget spreadsheet to record their choices. They then estimate each item to the second largest place value. Students must choose at least 2 expensive items, and 1 medium expensive item. They find the total. If it is more than $1,000,000 they need to try again. If they are successful they complete a budget proposal to explain their choices.
