These are irregular words, focus sounds and regular words that are in each days reading lesson from the Houghton Mifflin Reading Program for first grade. They are a helpful way to introduce words and sounds necessary for students to be successful with the program. Since HM is intended for on-level readers and that is simply not a reality for all classrooms, these warm ups are a helpful tool to use as a reading warm up and to introduce/practice words and sounds, or to use as an intervention/support in small group for struggling readers. For word reading, I introduce new words by "see, say, spell, chant". Then I have students think of what the word is as I point to the left of it, when I slide my finger underneath it they read the word. (Be sure to wait at least 3 seconds for think time). This helps all students be successful with the words and sounds. Sometimes students do not have enough practice with the words and sounds, so this is a way to supplement the program and help students have more success. I use a projector to use these with whole group, and print outs to use as individual practice in small groups
