The project asks students to calculate the surface area of different parts of a house in order to provide pricing for a job of their choice. From there, they need to calculate material costs, contractor discounts, labor costs, and GST before making a quote for the customer. There are charts with choices of materials and applicable prices and discounts. Students can choose many aspects of their project.
This is a detailed performance task that covers multiple Math outcomes. It was designed for the Grade 8 level (Alberta curriculum), and could be used with the Surface Area unit, or as a year-end review.
Concepts involved include surface area, rate, percentages, and more. It can most easily be done using spreadsheet software, but doesn't have to be. It's realistic, exciting, has lots of choice, and includes a rubric. It does NOT include the house plans: find some free online (with measurements) to use beside, as I don't want to infringe any copyrights by including them. Includes a page of teacher instructions with hints and guidelines. Works fabulously in the classroom!
