This is a great tool for scaffolding a compare and contrast writing assignment for a text to film of House on Mango Street! This resource helps students process key themes in both book and film.


It is important to note that the novel House on Mango Street was never made into a movie. There are several options available to help give your students a visual aide in understanding the book.

There is a TedEd “trailer” for a video that can be used to compare and contrast with the novel.

Some teachers will use the movie Real Women Have Curves.

You could also use any film with the themes found in House on Mango Street:

Identity, Dreams, Hopes, and Plans, Society and Class, Innocence, Gender, Women and Femininity, Foreignness, The Home, Family, Friendship
