When working with students in the typical or exceptional setting, it can be helpful to quickly check in on the emotions of the classroom. This reflective activity takes a couple of minutes and not only helps the teacher gauge where their students are emotionally, but can help students become self aware. There are a wide variety of ways to use this. I simply stop, ask students to give me a number and they show me what they are feeling using their fingers. For private discussions or when I sense something wrong with an individual student, I ask them to put their number in the corner of whatever paper they are working on. So easy and informative!
