This NGSS Engineering Design lesson explores the harmful effects of sunlight and challenges students to design a structure to block UV rays and the sun's warmth built from recycled materials. This hands-on lesson uses multiple experiments over several sessions to explore the topic. Students will create bracelets with UV color changing beads and pipe cleaners; they will use them to test how well shade structures on their campus protect against harmful UV rays. They will use thermometers to explore how well existing structures actually lower temperature. Using what they have learned, they will design, build and test their own structures and present a design to the school principal!
