Product Description
This activity simulates the changes in population of the fox and rabbit on a farm that has been changed over time due to a new highway and school being built. Students conduct this activity as the biologists would in a real life impact study.
The activity is done using household items, brown lunch bags and 2 different color beans. Over a period of 10 years the habit and wildlife change. Students will add or remove rabbits (white bean) and fox (brown bean) to or from the habit (brown bag) and begin to collect data. The directions show them how many of each they are to add or remove. The data is determined by what the puller removes from the bag a white or brown bean. A tally is kept and this will determine the number of rabbits or fox they see. As the years progress rabbits and fox will immigrate or emigrate through the habit. This will show the student how removing the food source can deplete the ecosystem. The student will also see what happens in an ecosystem when the top predator is removed.
Topics covered.
Predator vs prey
Immigrate vs emigrate
food chain
food web
ecosystem
habitat and niche
The students create graphs and discuss their findings.
