"How Do They Feel?" is a collection of worksheets which use high interest images to target the skills of recognizing and labeling emotions. It builds upon the Incredible 5-Point Scale, a strategy created by Kari Dunn Buron and Mitzi Beth Curtis. Being able to recognize and label feelings is an important first step in developing emotional literacy.
This packet of materials may be a good starting point for implementing IEP goals which target emotional regulation. Children are asked to discriminate among facial expressions: first among happy and sad, and later, by asking them to identify pictures which represent people who, referring to the color scale, feel green, yellow or red, depending upon their level of escalation.
It is appropriate for students on the autism spectrum, as well as others who exhibit social-emotional and behavioral challenges. These materials are targeted towards children in kindergarten and the early primary grades but can be adapted for use with a wider range of students.
