As you begin teaching about exploration, map-making, or general geography skills, you may discover that kids think GoogleMaps or MapQuest will meet all of their directional needs. I like to assign this activity for multiple reasons. First, it lets my student’s experience the amount of time and effort that go into creating maps. Second, it helps the students understand what early explorers went through without accurate or detailed maps. Third, it helps my students look up and see the world around them.
This activity is great for any history or geography class. I recommend assigning the observation page as a homework assignment for younger students. The map-making pages can be a homework assignment or in-class activity.
