My favorite book to use with this activity is NEVER RIDE YOUR ELEPHANT TO SCHOOL by Doug Johnson. This is a great resource to use at the beginning of the year to introduce the Math standards of gathering and analyzing data! The students will color their car, bus, or tennis shoe as they graph whether they get to school by car, bus or are a walker. Students/ Teacher will then use the Data Analysis Sheet to analyze the data show on the graph and discuss what students notice about their data.
Preparation - Print off colored headings and then use on large butcher paper. Question at the top and then car, bus, walk headings down the left side. Students will then color their mode of transportation, and create a bar graph. Be sure to laminate all pieces including Data Analysis Sheet so that you can reuse from year to year.
