"How do you write a main idea sentence?", a student once asked me. I pondered how to answer that question and realized there wasn't just one way and there wasn't a simple answer. Students have to understand how to find the main idea in order to write it in a sentence so I constructed a few organizers to help them write a main idea sentence that made sense.
Part 1: This organizer uses the knowledge of many details in a story that add up to the main idea by using the topic and those details to infer their similarities and conclude the main idea. These I use for my more advanced students or for when we've already discussed the main idea and I want students to identify the details.
