Ever get tired of the same ole direct instruction methods? Mix it up by incorporating this real-life, non-fiction podcast into your high school business classroom. "How I Built This with Guy Raz" is an amazing FREE resource for teaching business ownership or entrepreneurship. This project promotes personalized learning by allowing students to select an episode of their choosing from the series. I like to let students work with a partner, but this activity could be done individually as well.
Students will listen to their selected podcast (available from any mobile device or device with Internet access), take notes as they listen, collaborate with their partner to pair and share their findings, and create a poster with a business profile and timeline of the business history.
This project includes 2 PDFs--detailed project instructions and rubric for grading based on 40 points. The project requires students to compile a profile detailing the type of ownership, target market, changes the business has made, and description of products or services offered. Students will then create a timeline highlighting the history and background of the founding.
This project took my students one class period to complete (1.5 hours). You could also have students present their findings which would take an additional 20-30 minutes depending on the number of students in your class.
