Journeys First Grade Reading
Unit 3 Lesson 12
How Leopard Got His Spots
Letter Tiles Activity
This is a fun and routine activity that builds phonics/spelling skills. It simples building words with letter tiles. 26 letters are not all over student desks and on the floor! Students build with just the letters they need for the activity.
It's a hands-on activity that helps to engage and interest students!
There are 3 different activities for building words with letter tiles.
* on level- 2 activities that include digraph ch and review words
* challenge words - digraph ch and review words that are a bit more
There are 2 versions of each activity. One is where the student page is copied on cardstock (I use yellow or orange at my school) with letter tiles below for students to cut out. The other version saves cardstock and is where you print only the letter tiles on cardstock and the student page can be copy paper. If you have classroom letter tiles, then the 2nd version would be super for you! The sentence writing line at the bottom of this recording page adds a quick practice in sentence writing and reviews a word or multiple words (for challenge) within the sentence. Students love to read their sentences aloud!
This is a whole group activity where I guide my students at the front on the overhead or at the document camera. I watch to make sure all students make the word, then I call them to write the word and we move on. This is one of the few weekly activities where EVERY student is successful.
Many teachers also enjoy using these in a small group setting.
