How long is your smile? This is a terrific lesson to reinforce using tools to measure, gather accurate data and analyze the results. Students also work on being a participating member of a collaborative group. All in all, this is a fun community-builder that practices measurement skills.
After all the measuring and data collection, you will end up with a line plot where students can figure out the typical length of smile for a student of a particular grade.
Download the sample for more details.
You and your excited students will create a GIANT smiley face (about 6 feet in diameter!) with a smile that is as long as the combined smile in your classroom.
I have included a small poster to display next to your giant smiley in the hallway or lunchroom so staff and other students can see how you have been applying math standards with your class. You could post the line plot you create alongside!
