This project is a great alternative to the traditional first Thanksgiving story, which many students hear year after year. After reading How Many Days to America: A Thanksgiving Story as a read aloud or in a guided group, share these project directions with students. This is a tiered project. Students use pastels to imitate the artwork in the book. Then, they choose either level 1: Copy a sentence from the book to caption the illustration, level 2: Write a new sentence that could caption the illustration, or level 3: Write a journal entry from the point of view of on of the characters. This project gets students back in the book numerous times, leads to discussion of mood and how the tint and shade of the pastels can help to convey that. I post the pictures with written work on the wall during parent teacher conferences.
