PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

I developed these task cards as a functional curriculum teacher resource for middle and high school students in special education who are working on understanding money. The set would work well with younger students as well as part of either the core curriculum or to meet IEP goals.

**This product is available as part of a larger bundle including a kit for setting up structured work systems for students with autism and special needs. If you are in need of schedule visuals and materials for the work system itself at intermediate and secondary ages, please check out: Structured Work System Secondary Starter Bundle Life Skills Kit and Tasks **

This set includes 64 task cards for using the next dollar up strategy. In the next dollar up strategy, the student chooses the next dollar up from the price tag so that even without being able to make change, he can make a purchase and know how much he can afford. For instance, if an item costs $3.20, the student would circle / give 4 $1 bills

There are 2 sets included. In both sets the student circles the number of bills required to buy an item with a price tag on the card. One set (1-32) has prices set on it. The second set (32-64) are the same cards with empty price tags that the teacher can complete. This set is useful if you have students who tend to memorize answers. You can change the prices on the items regularly so the students cannot memorize them. The cards have department store items with prices between $1 and $9. Cards 1-16 are $1 to $5 and 17-32 are $5-$9.

The answer key is included. Because the student answers by circling the dollar bills needed on the card, I did not include an answer sheet. However, if you would like one, email me at drchrisreeve@gmail.com and I’m happy to make one and send it to you.

To make the cards, cut them out and laminate them. You could also print them and use them as worksheets. They will print in grayscale for this to conserve ink. If laminated, they can be kept on a ring or in a recipe card box. You can choose the cards appropriate for the student you are working with. The following are some methods for using them in a classroom:
As a group you can put them on a document camera and have the students use dry erase boards (or laminated sheet of paper) to select their answers, write them down and show them as response cards. The teacher can then check the work of all the students to see who has the right answer and who does not.
You can choose the task cards you want the students to complete based on their level of difficulty and give them a set to complete during small group or independent work.
You can include them in a student’s structured work system and can mix them up across the sessions so the students are always completing a different set of cards.
